Indigent Burial and Cremation Programs by County
Cherokee County – Cherokee County may provide funds, up to but not to exceed $1,000, through the Indigent Burial Assistance Program for the burial of indigents. This program provides for burial assistance when there is no person financially able, or when no estate exists to defray the cost of burial. In order to participate in the Indigent Burial Assistance Program, an application must be completed by the funeral home and filed with the Cherokee County Marshal’s Office. The County Marshal’s Office is the county agent who investigates the availability of resources to defray the cost of burial and determines the eligibility status and financial responsibility of the applicant applying for burial assistance. The investigation involves but is not limited to: verifying bank accounts, insurance claims, veteran’s eligibility, vehicle ownership, real property ownership, personal property ownership, property secured by medical facilities or others, employers benefits, income, and resources.
Cobb County – FL Sims Funeral Home in Symrna is the contracted provider for burial/cremation. Please see attached PDF link for more information or call Lydia at 678-424-1096.

Fulton County provides a chaplain for the services; family may use their minister. Please provide the county with the name and phone number of that individual. Viewing is at the funeral home discretion.
When requesting a cremation, the requestor completes an application. Once the application is completed the county request copies of the deceased birth certificate, pictured ID and social security card. Those same three documents are requested for immediate family members.
Family members may select a funeral home and inform the funeral home they’re requesting a county burial. It is up to the funeral home whether they will accept the burial. The county should be notified in order for the county to contact the funeral home.
This service is offered to families when the death occurs in Fulton County.
NOTE: All is contingent on approval.
